Tazumal's Main Pyramid (Structure B1-1) is the largest and best-preserved Maya monument in El Salvador, rising 24 meters in 14 stepped tiers. The name Tazumal means "pyramid where the victims were burned" in K'iche' Maya. Occupied from 100 to 1200 CE, the site shows strong Copan influence and later Pipil-Mexica modifications. A remarkable jade-rich tomb was discovered within the structure. At 51.49° Giza bearing, Tazumal anchors the southernmost extension of the Maya alignment corridor, 12,014 km from Giza — the geometric limit of Mesoamerican pyramid placement along this bearing band.
