Topoxte occupies three islands in Lake Yaxha, serving as the capital of the Kowoj Maya — one of the last independent Maya polities, resisting Spanish conquest until 1697. Building C on the main island represents the finest surviving example of Postclassic architecture in Guatemala's Peten region. The island setting provided natural defense and controlled lake-based trade networks. Occupation spans from the Pre-Classic through the Contact period, making it one of the longest-inhabited sites in the Maya lowlands. At 50.87° Giza bearing across 11,778 km, Topoxte's island geometry mirrors sacred water-site principles found across Mesoamerica.
