Topoxte is a Late Postclassic Maya island city in Lake Yaxha, Peten, Guatemala, occupied principally between approximately 1100 and 1450 CE. The site sits on the largest of three small islands in the lake and is one of the few sizeable urban centers known from the period between the Classic Maya collapse and Spanish conquest in the central Peten. The architecture follows a distinctive Postclassic pattern with low, wide platform pyramids, open-fronted colonnaded halls, and rectangular shrines arranged around small plazas — closer in plan to contemporary Mayapan in northern Yucatan than to the Classic-period centers of the Peten core. Construction is in limestone with stucco facing and traces of red and blue mural painting on the principal temple. The site was first systematically excavated by Cyrus Lundell in 1933 and re-investigated by a German project under Wolfgang Wurster in the 1990s.
The principal pyramid still rises among the trees on the main island, accessible today only by boat across the lake.
