Federal capital of the United States, founded 1791 to a plan by Pierre Charles L'Enfant. The city is laid out as a Baroque street grid overlaid with diagonal radial avenues converging on the Capitol and the President's House. The Washington Monument stands 169.3 metres tall — a hollow obelisk of marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss completed in 1884 after a 36-year construction stoppage that left a visible color seam at 46 metres. The shaft is the tallest stone structure in the world. The capital was deliberately sited on Maryland-Virginia diamond-shaped federal territory bordered by 40 sandstone boundary stones placed in 1791–92; thirty-six survive in situ today, making them among the oldest federal monuments in the country. The east-west axis through the Capitol, Mall, and Lincoln Memorial measures 3.5 kilometres.
They built a city to a Roman idea of order on a tidal swamp — and put the most-photographed needle on Earth at the geometric center.
