The Historic Yazd Wind Tower District (Fahadan) is the oldest residential quarter of Yazd, central Iran, a UNESCO World Heritage city since 2017 and one of the densest surviving examples of pre-industrial passive cooling architecture on Earth. The neighbourhood is built from sun-dried mud brick and sarooj plaster, with narrow shaded sabat alleys, sunken courtyard houses, and the badgir wind catchers that gave the district its skyline. A badgir is a tall chimney with internal vertical baffles that captures any breeze at roof height, drives it down across a basement pool or qanat channel, and exhausts warm interior air upward — a refrigerator with no moving parts. Some Fahadan towers exceed 30 metres. The 14th-century Jame Mosque of Yazd anchors the district, its twin minarets among the tallest in Iran.

Summer temperatures outside often top 40 °C while basement rooms below the wind catchers sit near 25 °C.
