The largest pyramid of Egypt and the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing. Conventionally dated to 2560 BCE under fourth-dynasty pharaoh Khufu. Original height: 146.7 metres; current height: 138.5 metres after loss of the polished Tura limestone casing in medieval Cairo construction. Base 230.4 metres per side, with the four corners aligned to the cardinal directions to within 1/15th of a degree. Built from approximately 2.3 million blocks averaging 2.5 tonnes; interior granite weighs up to 80 tonnes and was quarried 800 km south at Aswan. The internal structure includes the Grand Gallery (8.6 metres high on a 26° slope), the King's Chamber, the Queen's Chamber, and a series of unexplored shafts mapped only in 2017 by the ScanPyramids muon tomography project, which detected a previously unknown 30-metre void above the Grand Gallery. The structure was the tallest building on Earth for 3,800 years.
It is more accurately oriented to the cardinal points than the modern Greenwich Observatory.
