Second of three subsidiary queen's pyramids on the eastern face of the Great Pyramid at Giza. Designated G1-b, attributed to Meritites I, second consort of Khufu and mother of pharaoh Khafre. Base 49 metres per side, original height approximately 30 metres at a 51° slope. The pyramid was built in the same construction phase as the Great Pyramid itself; basalt paving from the original mortuary temple still rings the base. The internal chamber, sunk approximately 18 metres into bedrock, was robbed in antiquity and reused as a Coptic burial in late Roman times. The associated boat pit on the southeast side held a wooden funerary boat — found by Italian archaeologists in 1925 and reburied for preservation.
A 4,500-year-old wooden boat sits in the sand next to the queen's pyramid because the Italians who dug it up in 1925 decided it would last longer there.
