Pyramid G1-d

Cult-pyramid (satellite or symbolic burial) at the southeastern corner of the Khufu complex, designated G1-d. The pyramid, excavated only in 1992 by a team from the Egyptian Antiquities Organization led by Zahi Hawass, was previously unknown. Base 21.5 metres per side, original height approximately 13 metres at 52°. The internal chamber is a small T-shaped room with no sarcophagus; the function is conventionally identified as ka-pyramid for ritual rather than physical burial. The capstone (pyramidion), found in the surrounding rubble, is among the only Old Kingdom pyramidions ever recovered intact and is now displayed in the Saqqara museum. The structure was hidden under modern landfill for almost a century.

A small fourth pyramid at the corner of the Great Pyramid complex went unnoticed for a hundred and fifty years of professional archaeology — and its capstone, in storage, is older than nearly every other piece of carved stone in the country.
