Pyramid G3-a

Subsidiary queen's pyramid at the southern face of the Pyramid of Menkaure, designated G3-a. Base 44 metres per side, originally 28 metres tall at a 51° slope; current height 28 metres with the original casing largely preserved on the lower courses — granite at the bottom, limestone above. The pyramid is conventionally attributed to Khamerernebty II, principal consort of Menkaure. The internal chamber, sunk into the bedrock, contained a granite sarcophagus that was empty when excavated by Howard Vyse in 1837. The pyramid is the largest of the three Menkaure subsidiary pyramids; its near-complete granite casing in the lower courses is the only example of such facing on a queen's pyramid.

The wife of the smallest of the Giza pyramid-builders has the only queen's pyramid in Egypt with its bottom courses still wearing red granite — Aswan stone hauled 800 km for a building too small to need it.
