The largest pyramid at Abusir, Neferirkare's monument originally rose to 72 meters — taller than any 5th Dynasty pyramid. Uniquely, it began as a six-step pyramid before being converted to a true pyramid with limestone casing, documenting a mid-construction design change. The conversion was never completed, and the steps remain exposed on the upper levels. The Abusir Papyri, discovered in the mortuary temple in the 1890s, constitute the oldest surviving administrative archive in Egypt — recording duty rosters, temple inventories, daily rituals, and festival schedules that reveal the practical operation of a pyramid cult in extraordinary detail. At Giza bearing 324.91° and 11.4 km from the Great Pyramid, Neferirkare's complex sits between Sahure to the north and Nyuserre to the south in the Abusir diagonal — a deliberate alignment of three pyramids echoing the Giza model. His premature death left the temple unfinished, to be completed in mudbrick by his successors.
