Pyramid of Neferirkare at Abusir, third pharaoh of the fifth dynasty (~2475 BCE). The largest pyramid at Abusir: original height 70 metres on a 105-metre square base, intended to be a true pyramid but converted mid-construction into a stepped pyramid by the application of a packing layer over the steps that was never completed. Current height 45 metres. The funerary temple complex was unfinished at Neferirkare's death and was hastily completed in mudbrick by his successor Niuserre. Excavations of the temple by Ludwig Borchardt in 1903 recovered the Abusir Papyri — the largest archive of administrative documents from the Old Kingdom, detailing temple finances, daily ritual schedules, and personnel rosters spanning two centuries.
A pharaoh's pyramid that was never finished produced the most complete surviving Old Kingdom administrative archive — because the temple in front of it ran for two hundred years.
