The Pyramid of Userkaf at Saqqara, built around 2494 BCE, inaugurated the 5th Dynasty's pyramid-building tradition at a deliberately symbolic location: the northeast corner of Djoser's Step Pyramid complex. Originally rising 49 meters with a base of 73.3 meters, it is now severely ruined — its core of loose rubble and sand, once contained by a stone casing, has collapsed into a conical mound. Userkaf's innovation was not his pyramid but his sun temple at Abu Ghurob, beginning a 5th Dynasty tradition of solar worship. His mortuary temple contained a colossal red granite head of the pharaoh, one of the largest royal sculptures of the Old Kingdom. At Giza bearing 325.22° and 14.3 km from the Great Pyramid, Userkaf's choice to build beside Djoser rather than at Giza or Abusir was a political statement — linking his new dynasty to the founder of monumental stone architecture rather than to the 4th Dynasty's colossal legacy.
