The Pyramid of Teti at Saqqara, built around 2323 BCE, inaugurated the 6th Dynasty adjacent to the northeast corner of the Djoser complex. Originally 52.5 meters tall, it is now heavily ruined externally but preserves remarkably intact interior passages with extensive Pyramid Texts — the spells that protected the pharaoh's journey through the afterlife. The complex includes two queens' pyramids (Iput I and Khuit II) and an extensive cemetery of high officials, including the famous vizier Mereruka, whose 32-room mastaba contains the largest collection of Old Kingdom wall paintings at any single site. At Giza bearing 323.91° and 14.3 km from the Great Pyramid, Teti's reign began a period of increasing decentralization in Egypt. He may have been assassinated — an ancient king list notes he was "killed by his bodyguards." The pyramid town that served his mortuary cult persisted for centuries, becoming a vibrant settlement that outlived the Old Kingdom itself.
