The Pyramid of Unas at Saqqara, built around 2353 BCE, is a modest structure at 43 meters tall — but its burial chamber contains the most revolutionary innovation in Egyptian funerary architecture: the Pyramid Texts, the oldest religious writings in the world. These 283 spells, carved in blue-green hieroglyphs on the white limestone walls, comprise humanity's earliest attempt to describe the afterlife journey — incantations for the pharaoh to ascend to the stars, join the circumpolar constellations, and become one with Orion and the Duat. The 750-meter causeway preserves scenes of famine, trade missions, and craft production. At Giza bearing 327.83° and 14.6 km from the Great Pyramid, Unas's innovation spread to every subsequent pyramid: his texts evolved into the Coffin Texts and ultimately the Book of the Dead. Though now reduced to a ruined mound, this small pyramid's interior launched a literary and spiritual tradition that would endure for two millennia.
