The Pyramid of Neferefre (also known as Raneferef) at Abusir is one of the most informative failures in Egyptian archaeology. When this 5th Dynasty pharaoh died after only two years on the throne (c. 2460 BCE), his pyramid had reached barely 7 meters in height. Rather than abandon it, his successors hastily converted the unfinished square base into a mastaba-like structure by filling the core with rubble and capping it. Czech excavations in the 1980s-2000s yielded extraordinary finds: fragments of Neferefre's mummy (confirming he died young, around age 20-23), hundreds of papyrus fragments detailing temple administration, and exquisite royal statuary including a painted limestone seated figure. At Giza bearing 325.59° and 11.5 km from the Great Pyramid, this humble ruin paradoxically preserved more archaeological evidence than many intact pyramids — precisely because its hasty conversion sealed artifacts that would otherwise have been looted.
