Unfinished pyramid of fifth-dynasty pharaoh Neferefre (also called Raneferef) at Abusir (~2460 BCE). The pyramid was abandoned at the level of the first course; the unfinished base measures 65 metres per side and 5 metres tall, capped with a hasty mudbrick mound to give the appearance of a low burial mound. Neferefre died after a reign of less than two years; his successor's hasty completion of the funerary cult preserved an extraordinary amount of organic material, including hundreds of papyri (the Neferefre archive), wooden statues, and ritual objects normally lost to time. The recovered statuary includes a portrait of the king as a small boy with the goddess Hathor — among the most personal Old Kingdom royal images.
A pharaoh died before his pyramid was a metre tall, and his rushed mudbrick burial preserved the most personal royal portrait in the Old Kingdom.
