The Pyramid of Senusret II at el-Lahun near the Fayum oasis was built around 1880 BCE with an innovative anti-tomb-robber strategy: the entrance was hidden on the south side rather than the traditional north face, and the subterranean passages include multiple dead-end corridors and a flooded chamber to thwart intruders. The pyramid was constructed around a natural rock outcrop that forms 12 meters of its core, reducing the required building material. At Giza bearing 10.98° and 84.5 km from the Great Pyramid, the nearby Kahun workers' village — discovered by Flinders Petrie in 1889 — is the best-preserved planned settlement of the Middle Kingdom, revealing the daily lives of the laborers and administrators who built the pyramid. Petrie also found the Lahun Papyri here, including mathematical texts and one of the oldest known gynecological documents. Princess Sit-Hathor-Iunet's tomb nearby yielded a gold uraeus and spectacular jewelry now in the Cairo Museum.
