The Pyramid of Hawara, built by Amenemhat III around 1810 BCE after the structural failure of his Black Pyramid at Dahshur, became his actual burial place. The pyramid itself is modest at 58 meters, but its mortuary temple was legendary: ancient writers including Herodotus, Strabo, and Pliny described it as a "Labyrinth" surpassing even the pyramids of Giza in wonder — a vast complex of 3,000 rooms on two levels, half underground. At Giza bearing 16.12° and 81.6 km from the Pyramid Plateau, the Labyrinth may have served as an administrative center for all of Egypt's 42 nomes. Though the temple is now completely destroyed, Petrie's excavation in 1888-89 confirmed its enormous footprint. The pyramid's security system was the most sophisticated in Egypt: the burial chamber is a single block of quartzite weighing an estimated 110 tonnes, sealed by a 45-tonne quartzite slab lowered by a sand-hydraulic mechanism — yet tomb robbers still penetrated it in antiquity.
