Pyramid of Zawyet el-Maiyitin

Provincial step pyramid at Zawyet el-Maiyitin, on the east bank of the Nile in Middle Egypt, attributed to either pharaoh Huni or pharaoh Sneferu of the Third or early Fourth Dynasty, ~2600 BCE. Original base 22 metres per side; original height around 17 metres at a 51° slope. The structure is a four-stepped pyramid built of limestone blocks with no internal substructure — no burial chamber, no corridor, no entrance. Excavated in part by Raymond Weill in 1912 and re-examined by an Egyptian mission in the 1980s. It is the only documented royal pyramid built on the east bank of the Nile rather than the west — anomalous among Egyptian funerary monuments, where the dead are placed on the side of the setting sun. Why it was built east rather than west has never been adequately explained.

A pyramid on the wrong side of the river, with no tomb inside it, in a dynasty that built six others to the same template at the same time.
