The White Temple of Uruk, perched atop the Anu Ziggurat, was the tallest human-made structure on Earth from approximately 4000 BCE until the Pyramid of Djoser surpassed it around 2650 BCE — a reign of over 1,300 years. The temple was entirely whitewashed inside and out, creating a gleaming beacon visible across the flat Mesopotamian plain. Measuring 17.5 by 22.3 meters atop the 13-meter platform, the sanctuary of the sky god Anu established the template for all subsequent ziggurat architecture. At 267.60° Giza bearing, the Anu Ziggurat sits on a near-east-west axis with the Great Pyramid. Uruk itself, with 40,000 inhabitants by 3000 BCE, was the world's first true city.
