The Ebabbar — Temple of the Sun God Shamash at Larsa — was among the most important religious centers in all of southern Mesopotamia. The 200-hectare walled city was enclosed by fortifications measuring 5,376 meters in circumference with six gates, rivaling Babylon itself during the early 2nd millennium BCE. Larsa's kings Rim-Sin I and Hammurabi fought the decisive battle for supremacy over southern Mesopotamia. At 267.91° Giza bearing, the site sits on the near-east-west Mesopotamian axis with the Great Pyramid. The ziggurat's dedication to Shamash links it to solar observation and timekeeping — the same astronomical functions that governed pyramid placement across the ancient world.
