The Gallery Pyramid at Caral in the Supe Valley, Peru — one of the six monumental platforms of the oldest urban site in the Americas, built between approximately 3000 and 1800 BCE. Original base 110 by 75 metres; original height 18 metres on four terraces. The pyramid is named for the gallery — a long internal corridor running through the substructure of the platform — that distinguished it from the other five Caral pyramids during excavation by Ruth Shady Solís from 1994 onward. The interior gallery preserved evidence of organic offerings, condor and pelican feathers, llama-wool textiles, and a dedicatory deposit of unfired clay figurines. The construction of an interior corridor through a solid platform mound is not paralleled at any of the other Caral pyramids and may represent a specialised ritual function — perhaps an oracular or initiatory chamber.
