Pachacamac was the most important pilgrimage center in ancient Peru — an oracle site so revered that even the conquering Inca dared not destroy it but instead added their own Temple of the Sun alongside the existing shrines. Occupied from 200 CE, the site spans multiple civilizations (Lima, Wari, Ychsma, Inca). The Pachacamac idol — a carved wooden post with two faces — has been radiocarbon dated to 760-876 CE. When Hernando Pizarro arrived in 1533 seeking gold, he was disgusted by the "filthy" idol in its darkened chamber. At 62.36° Giza bearing, Pachacamac's oracular function connects it to the global tradition of sacred sites as communication nodes between realms.
