Piye (formerly Piankhy) conquered all of Egypt in 728 BCE and founded the 25th Dynasty, yet chose to be buried not in the land he conquered but at El-Kurru, the ancestral Kushite cemetery. His pyramid is the first known royal pyramid burial in the Kushite tradition — reviving a practice Egypt itself had abandoned a millennium earlier. Nearby, his beloved war horses were buried standing upright in full silver regalia — an unprecedented funerary honor. The 357.27° Giza bearing connects El-Kurru to the Great Pyramid along a near-meridian line spanning 1,287 km. Piye's Victory Stela, found at Gebel Barkal, is one of the longest ancient Egyptian texts ever discovered.
