At El-Kurru, 24 horses were buried standing upright in full silver and bronze regalia — an honor unprecedented in the ancient world. Arranged in four rows corresponding to four successive kings — Piye (4 horses), Shabaka (8), Shebitqo (8), and Tantamani (4) — the burials reveal the extraordinary status these animals held in Kushite royal culture. George Reisner's 1918 excavations found the horses adorned with silver headpieces, beaded necklaces, and copper bells. The 357.27° Giza bearing places this unique cemetery on the El-Kurru meridian corridor. The Kushites were renowned horsemen; Piye's Victory Stela records his fury at finding his enemies had mistreated their horses.
