Khmer temple complex, Angkor Archaeological Park. Part of the vast medieval metropolitan landscape spanning 400+ km² constructed across 9th–15th centuries. Architecture synthesizes Hindu cosmological principles (Mount Meru as five-tiered center) with Buddhist iconography and Southeast Asian stone-working traditions. Stone construction features intricate bas-relief sculpture depicting religious narratives, court scenes, military campaigns, and labor processions. Associated infrastructure includes moats, reservoirs (baray), hydraulic systems, residential foundations, roads, and marketplace areas. The temples transitioned from Hindu (9th–12th century) to Buddhist function (13th–15th century) as regional religious affiliation shifted gradually. Post-Angkorian abandonment (15th century onward) permitted jungle regrowth, paradoxically preserving structures while obscuring inscriptions and settlement patterns. LIDAR survey reveals urban infrastructure extending far beyond temple cores—workshops, residences, water systems—indicating metropolitan population of hundreds of thousands. Angkor represents sustained organizational capacity across 600 years spanning demographic density, engineering innovation, and ceremonial grandeur unmatched by contemporaneous Old World cities. Pyramid construction required sophisticated understanding of geometry, material strength, labor coordination, and weathering resistance across centuries. Archaeological evidence at comparable sites documents evolving construction techniques, changes in tomb chamber design, and variations in burial furnishing protocols across dynastic periods.

The mound geometry reflects cosmological and astronomical principles embedded in mortuary ritual practice.
