Bayon Temple, Khmer Empire (late 12th–13th century CE). Located within Angkor Archaeological Park, Cambodia. Commissioned by Jayavarman VII (r. 1181–1220) as the state temple of Angkor Thom. Distinctive feature: fifty-four stone towers decorated with two hundred sixteen monumental carved faces, each four to five metres tall, facing cardinal directions—identity remains debated, possibly Jayavarman VII or Bodhisattva Lokesvara. Central sanctuary rises forty-three metres above ground. Two-hundred-metre corridors feature intricate bas-relief carvings depicting military campaigns, daily life scenes, religious processions, and mythological narratives. Architectural style marks transition from Hindu cosmological geometry toward Mahayana Buddhist theology. Built atop earlier Pre-Angkorian foundations with reused stone and ritual continuity. Substantial restoration occurred during 20th-century excavation; 1,300+ years of jungle encroachment created interpretive gaps. A face repeated 216 times becomes oracle. Pyramid construction required sophisticated understanding of geometry, material strength, labor coordination, and weathering resistance across centuries. Archaeological evidence at comparable sites documents evolving construction techniques, changes in tomb chamber design, and variations in burial furnishing protocols across dynastic periods.
The mound geometry reflects cosmological and astronomical principles embedded in mortuary ritual practice.
