Lolei consists of four brick towers originally built on an artificial island in the center of the Indratataka baray — a massive reservoir now completely dry. Dedicated by Yasovarman I to his ancestors in 893 CE, the inscription records the founding of the new capital at Angkor. Part of the Roluos group alongside Bakong and Preah Ko, representing the earliest Angkorian period. An active Buddhist monastery now occupies the site, its saffron-robed monks maintaining continuity of sacred use across twelve centuries. At 297.30° Giza bearing, Lolei marks the transition point between pre-Angkor and Angkor — a geometric hinge where Khmer civilization pivoted toward its golden age.
