The largest pre-Columbian settlement north of Mexico flourished from 600-1400 CE at the confluence of the Mississippi, Missouri, and Illinois rivers. Monks Mound — 30 meters high, covering 6 hectares — is larger at its base than the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan. At its peak around 1100 CE, Cahokia's population of 20,000-40,000 exceeded contemporary London. Woodhenge — a series of timber post circles — functioned as a solar calendar marking equinoxes and solstices. The city was abandoned around 1400 CE for reasons still debated: deforestation, flooding, or social upheaval. Over 120 earthen mounds remain, the largest concentration in North America.
