Cylindrical stone tower in Touro Park, Newport, Rhode Island, 8.5 metres tall and 6.7 metres in diameter, supported by eight stone pillars forming a colonnade. ” Carbon dating of mortar samples (Heinemeier and Jungner, 2003) yielded dates centered on 1635–1698 CE. Alternative attributions to Norse or Templar builders have been advanced by various authors since the 19th century, citing similarity to Romanesque round towers in Scandinavia and to Templar churches; none has been validated by the carbon dates. The structure has only one entry, no fireplace and no documented use as housing; its function as a windmill is consistent with mid-17th-century English mill design.
A round stone tower in Rhode Island has been claimed by Vikings, Templars, and a Revolutionary War traitor's great-grandfather — and the carbon dates point to the colonial governor.
