Caana ("Sky Palace") is the largest structure at Caracol in the Maya Mountains of Belize, rising 43 metres above the surrounding plaza and remaining the tallest building in modern Belize today. " Caana is composed of three pyramids set on a single massive platform around an elevated courtyard, with palace ranges flanking the summit. Excavations by Diane and Arlen Chase since 1985 have documented dozens of royal tombs within the structure. The complex required moving an estimated 350,000 cubic metres of stone and fill, an undertaking comparable in scale to the largest Maya construction projects ever attempted. Caracol's population at its peak in the seventh century may have approached 100,000 inhabitants, larger than contemporary Tikal. The Caracol Archaeological Project under the Chases continues annual investigation of the site.
Caana is a pyramid still taller than anything else in the country a thousand years after its builders walked away.
