Caana ("Sky Palace") at Caracol, Belize, rises 43 meters — still the tallest man-made structure in the country. This massive triadic pyramid complex was the ceremonial heart of a Maya city that, at its peak around 650 CE, covered 200 square kilometers with a population exceeding 100,000 — larger than contemporaneous Tikal. In 562 CE, Caracol inflicted a devastating "Star War" defeat on Tikal, initiating a 130-year hiatus in that city's monument construction. Caana's summit supports three temples and two palace-type buildings, creating an elevated residential-ceremonial acropolis. At Giza bearing 51.07° and 11,774 km from the Pyramid Plateau, Caracol's road system includes causeways radiating to agricultural terraces that fed the population through intensive hillside farming of the Vaca Plateau. The site was lost to the jungle until 1937, and much remains unexcavated — LiDAR surveys in 2009 revealed that the known city was just a fraction of the actual settlement.
