The Carolina Bays are a field of more than 500,000 shallow elliptical depressions scattered across the Atlantic Coastal Plain from northern Florida to southern New Jersey, with the densest concentration in North and South Carolina. Each bay is rimmed on its southeast side by a low sand ridge, and the long axes of bays in any one region are remarkably parallel — trending roughly northwest to southeast in the Carolinas and rotating northward as one moves up the coast. Bay widths range from tens of metres to more than ten kilometres. The mainstream geological explanation is wind and wave reworking of older sand sheets under Pleistocene periglacial conditions, with optically stimulated luminescence dates ranging from about 100,000 to 12,000 years before present. A persistent fringe hypothesis — recently revived under the Younger Dryas Impact framework — argues for a single airburst or impact event. The pattern is consistent.

The cause is not.
