Choquequirao is a late Inca royal estate on a ridge spur in the Vilcabamba range of southern Peru, at 3,050 metres elevation above the Apurimac River canyon. The site is attributed to the reign of Topa Inca or his son Wayna Qhapaq in the late 15th century and was occupied into the early years of the Spanish conquest as part of the Vilcabamba refuge of the neo-Inca state under Manco Inca and his successors. The complex covers some 18 hectares of plazas, ceremonial platforms, residential compounds, terraces, and a large Ushnu, with only an estimated 40 percent of the site cleared from cloud forest cover. The most distinctive feature is the lower set of terraces decorated with white quartz mosaics depicting llamas in procession — discovered in 2002. Access requires a two-day trek descending and reascending the Apurimac canyon.

The llama mosaics still march across the lower terrace walls in white against grey schist.
