Vilcashuaman, at 3,490m in the Ayacucho region, was the geographic center of the Inca Empire — Tawantinsuyu's navel. Its truncated pyramid ushnu, crowned by the carved Seat of the Inca once sheathed in gold leaf, served as the throne from which the emperor administered the empire's four quarters. A Sun Temple with finely dressed stone walls rivaling Cusco's Qoricancha stood adjacent to the ceremonial plaza. The Spanish built a church directly atop the temple. With 62.66° Giza bearing at 12,198 km, Vilcashuaman marks the western extent of the Pleiades corridor as it sweeps through Peru's central highlands.
