Nohoch Mul at Coba is the tallest pyramid on the Yucatan Peninsula, rising 42 meters (120 steps) above the surrounding limestone plain — one of the few Maya pyramids visitors can still climb. Built during the Classic period (600-900 CE), the pyramid's rounded-corner style resembles Tikal's temples more than the Puuc architecture of nearby Uxmal, reflecting Coba's strong political and trade connections to the Petén lowlands 300 km to the south. Coba itself was a major city of 50,000 people connected by 50 sacbeob (raised limestone causeways) — the longest extending 100 km to Yaxuna, the longest ancient road in the Maya world. At Giza bearing 50.99° and 11,400 km from the Pyramid Plateau, Nohoch Mul commands a view of unbroken forest stretching to the horizon in every direction. The name means "Large Mound" in Yucatec Maya — an understatement for a structure that dominated the landscape for 50 km.
