El Castillo, the Temple of Kukulkan at Chichen Itza, is a 30-meter stepped pyramid whose four staircases of 91 steps each, plus the summit platform, encode 365 days — the solar year rendered in stone. Designated one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, the pyramid produces two spectacular phenomena: during equinoxes, triangular shadows cascade down the north balustrade creating the illusion of a descending serpent, and a handclap at the base generates a chirped echo that replicates the call of the quetzal bird. Ground-penetrating radar in 2016 revealed a cenote (water-filled sinkhole) directly beneath the pyramid, and within it, an earlier pyramid and a red jaguar throne with jade-inlay eyes. At Giza bearing 50.55° and 11,454 km from the Pyramid Plateau, El Castillo sits at the intersection of Maya, Toltec, and earlier Olmec cultural influences — a synthesizing monument that unified Mesoamerican astronomical knowledge into a single architectural masterwork.
