Temple 16 (Rosalila)

Temple 16 at Copan, Honduras, contains within its mass the perfectly preserved Rosalila Temple — discovered in 1989 by Honduran archaeologist Ricardo Agurcia Fassquelle, buried intact within a later pyramid like a Russian nesting doll. The Rosalila ("Pink Lily") temple, dating to 571 CE, retains its original painted stucco facade in vivid red, green, and yellow — the only Maya temple found with its decoration completely intact, providing an unprecedented view of how these buildings actually appeared. The temple's iconography depicts the mountain of creation with the celestial bird deity perched atop. At Giza bearing 51.51° and 11,910 km from the Pyramid Plateau, Copan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its sculptural tradition — the Hieroglyphic Stairway contains the longest Maya text in stone (2,200 glyphs). The deliberate burial and preservation of Rosalila by later builders suggests it was too sacred to destroy, even when a larger pyramid was required.
