Coastal town on the Nicoya Peninsula of Guanacaste Province, northwestern Costa Rica, set behind a 7-kilometre crescent of Pacific beach divided into the named segments Playa Guiones, Playa Pelada, and Playa Nosara proper. The costa_rica_yoga_spa_nosara record refers specifically to the dense cluster of yoga studios and wellness establishments concentrated along the Playa Guiones strip, which began developing in the late 1990s after the Nosara Yoga Institute first opened its doors in 1994. The wider Nosara region was platted as a planned community in 1968 by American developer Alan Hutchinson, who imposed easements protecting the beachfront forest and inland wildlife corridor — an unusual conservation arrangement for the period that has shaped the area's land-use pattern ever since. The Nicoya Peninsula is one of the world's five identified Blue Zones of unusual longevity, originally documented by Belgian demographer Michel Poulain and popularised by journalist Dan Buettner.
A speculative beach subdivision became a wellness town because its founder accidentally protected the trees.
