The Inca capital was designed as a living zoomorphic map — its streets form the outline of a puma, with the massive fortress of Sacsayhuamán as the "head" and the confluence of the Tullumayo and Huatanay rivers as the "tail." The puma's head designation suggests Sacsayhuamán's function as a crown chakra or consciousness center. Cusco served as the hub of the Inca road network (Qhapaq Ñan), 40,000 kilometers of engineered highways connecting to Machu Picchu, Nazca, and Tiwanaku — the largest road system in the pre-Columbian world. Inca stonework at Sacsayhuamán features blocks exceeding 100 tons fitted without mortar to tolerances that challenge modern engineering explanation. The name Cusco (Qosqo) means "navel" in Quechua.
