The Pyramid of Ahmose at Abydos, built around 1550 BCE, is the last royal pyramid ever constructed in Egypt — and it was never intended as a tomb. This cenotaph (memorial monument) was built by Ahmose I, founder of the New Kingdom and the 18th Dynasty, who expelled the Hyksos invaders and reunified Egypt. The small, steep-sided pyramid (approximately 50 meters base, now ruined) anchored a larger memorial complex that included a temple, a terraced temple for his grandmother Tetisheri, and massive mudbrick enclosure walls. At Giza bearing 349.63° and 430 km from the Great Pyramid, Ahmose's choice of Abydos — the sacred city of Osiris — over the traditional Memphite cemeteries signaled that the pyramid tradition was ending. His actual burial was in the Valley of the Kings at Thebes, inaugurating the rock-cut tomb tradition that replaced pyramids. The Pyramid of Ahmose is the final echo of a 1,100-year architectural tradition.
