The Pyramid of Zawyet el-Maiyitin holds a unique distinction: it is the only pyramid in Egypt built on the east bank of the Nile. All other pyramids were placed on the west bank — the land of the setting sun and the dead in Egyptian cosmology. Standing about 5 meters tall on a rocky spur overlooking the Nile near modern Minya, this small three-step provincial pyramid (c. 2600 BCE) has no internal chambers. At Giza bearing 7.78° and 217 km from the Great Pyramid, its east-bank anomaly has never been satisfactorily explained: did the builders prioritize the hilltop's visibility over cosmological convention, or did the east-west funerary distinction not yet apply to non-funerary provincial markers? The pyramid is one of seven identical small step pyramids distributed along the Nile, possibly functioning as royal symbols of territorial control. Its location near the ancient nome of Oryx places it at a strategic point where the Nile Valley narrows between limestone cliffs.
