Monte d'Accoddi in Sardinia is the only known stepped platform monument in Western Europe — a proto-ziggurat predating the earliest Mesopotamian examples by several centuries, built around 4000-3500 BCE. The structure has no interior chambers, functioning as an open-air altar platform accessed by a long ramp. Two construction phases are evident: the earlier 'Red Temple' and the larger 'Temple' built over it. At 113.27° Giza bearing, Monte d'Accoddi sits on a ley line connecting Sardinia to the Egyptian heartland across 2,371 km. The platform's resemblance to Near Eastern ziggurats has sparked debate about prehistoric maritime contacts between Sardinia and the eastern Mediterranean.
