Garagay is one of the earliest monumental centers on Peru's central coast, its U-shaped temple complex dating to the Initial Period (1800-900 BCE). The central mound rises 25 meters, flanked by two lateral arms enclosing a sunken circular plaza — a template that would be replicated across the Andes for millennia. Polychrome clay friezes depicting fanged supernatural beings once adorned the interior chambers, among the oldest architectural sculpture in the Americas. Tragically, much of Garagay has been destroyed by Lima's urban expansion. At 62.25° Giza bearing across 12,409 km, it anchors the coastal node of Peru's ancient ceremonial network.
