Iximche is a Late Postclassic Maya capital in the Guatemalan highlands at 2,260 metres elevation, founded around 1470 CE as the seat of the Kaqchikel kingdom after the Kaqchikel split from the Kʼicheʼ confederacy. The site occupies a defensible plateau bounded on three sides by ravines and is laid out as a series of paired plazas, each containing twin temple pyramids, ballcourts, and palace compounds — the Mesoamerican Postclassic Highland pattern. Construction is of stone and adobe with stucco facing and traces of red, white, and black wall painting. Pedro de Alvarado entered Iximche on 14 April 1524 and briefly established the first Spanish capital of Guatemala here before Kaqchikel revolt forced the Spanish to relocate. The city was abandoned in 1526. Excavations by George Guillemin in the 1960s exposed the principal plazas, which remain visible today.
The twin temple foundations still stand on either side of each plaza axis.
