Iximche was the capital of the Kaqchikel Maya from 1470 until 1524, when Pedro de Alvarado declared it the first capital of Guatemala — before the Kaqchikel rebelled and the Spanish relocated. Built on a naturally defensible plateau flanked by deep ravines, the city's pyramid-temples, palaces, and twin ballcourts served a population that had broken away from the K'iche' Maya just decades earlier. Evidence of human sacrifice and elaborate burial offerings documents the ritual intensity of highland Maya civilization at European contact.
