Q'umarkaj, also called Utatlan, is the capital of the Late Postclassic Kʼicheʼ Maya kingdom in the western highlands of Guatemala at 2,000 metres elevation, near modern Santa Cruz del Quiche. The city was founded in the late 14th century by the Kʼicheʼ ruler Kʼukumatz and reached its peak under his successor Kʼiqʼab in the mid-15th century, when Kʼicheʼ military expansion controlled much of the highlands. The site is laid out on a defensible plateau with paired temple pyramids dedicated to the patron deities Tohil, Awilix, and Jakawitz, a ballcourt, a palace compound, and an open central plaza. Construction is of stone with stucco facing, much of it stripped for colonial-era reuse. Pedro de Alvarado captured the city on 7 March 1524 and burned the rulers Oxib-Keh and Beleheb-Tzy alive in the central plaza, then razed the city. The Popol Vuh — the principal surviving Kʼicheʼ creation epic — was composed in nearby Chichicastenango shortly after this destruction.

The plaza foundations of the Tohil temple are still visible.
