Jerusalem - Temple Mount

Old city occupying a 0.9 km² plateau in the Judean hills, continuously inhabited for at least 4,000 years and considered sacred by Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The Temple Mount (Har HaBayit / Haram al-Sharif) is a trapezoidal 144,000 m² platform built by Herod the Great around 19 BCE, expanding the Second Temple foundation. The Western Wall (Kotel) is the surviving 488-metre retaining wall of that platform; courses of Herodian ashlars at its base weigh up to 570 tonnes. The Dome of the Rock, completed 691 CE under Caliph Abd al-Malik, is the oldest extant Islamic monument, its golden dome covering the Foundation Stone where Jewish tradition places the Holy of Holies and Islamic tradition places Muhammad's ascent. Jerusalem has been destroyed twice, besieged 23 times, captured and recaptured 44 times.

The same rock is sacred to three faiths that disagree about almost everything else.
