The Western Deffufa of Kerma is the largest mud-brick structure in all of Africa: 52.3 meters long, 26.7 meters wide, and originally standing over 18 meters tall. Capital of the Kingdom of Kerma — Africa's first independent urban civilization outside Egypt — the city hosted over 10,000 inhabitants by 1700 BCE. A cemetery of 30,000+ graves, including four royal tumuli up to 90 meters in diameter, testifies to centuries of accumulated power. Kerma traded with and warred against Egypt for over 1,000 years. At just 3.48° bearing to Giza and only 1,156 km distant, Kerma sits almost precisely on the Giza meridian — a direct Nile-corridor link.
