The Temple of the Crossed Hands at Kotosh is one of the oldest temples in the Americas — a clay relief of two crossed human forearms dating to approximately 2300 BCE, predating the Chavin culture by over a millennium. The site in Peru's Huanuco highlands reveals multiple construction phases spanning over 2,000 years, with each successive temple built directly atop its predecessor. Japanese archaeologist Seiichi Izumi's excavations in the 1960s established the 'Kotosh Religious Tradition' — a pattern of small ceremonial chambers with central hearths found across the Andean highlands. At 61.57° Giza bearing, the site sits on the highland Pleiades corridor. The crossed hands motif remains enigmatic — no other example has been found in the Americas.
