A spectacular Roman labyrinth mosaic floor with the Minotaur at its center, preserved at Conimbriga — the largest and best-preserved Roman ruins in Portugal. The mosaic, from the 2nd-3rd century CE, depicts a multicursal (choice-based) labyrinth rather than the classical unicursal design, reflecting Roman preference for intellectual puzzle over meditative path. Conimbriga, inhabited from the Iron Age through Visigothic times, was a major Roman city with sophisticated heating systems, fountains, and mosaic floors. At 298.38° Giza bearing, the site sits on Portugal's limestone meseta where Roman engineers exploited natural springs. The labyrinth mosaic's survival through 1,800 years of occupation, abandonment, and excavation makes it one of the finest in situ examples of Roman labyrinth art in the Iberian Peninsula.
