A stone labyrinth called Völundarhús ('Wayland's House') hidden between Dritvík and Djúpalónssandur on the Snæfellsnes peninsula in western Iceland. The name invokes Wayland the Smith, the Norse master craftsman imprisoned in a labyrinth by King Nidud — a parallel to Daedalus in Greek myth. Built by seasonal fishermen, it sits below Snæfellsjökull, the glacier-volcano Jules Verne chose as the entrance to the center of the Earth. Icelandic parchment manuscripts depicting Völundarhús date to the 14th-15th centuries. At 5,383 km from Giza, this is among the most remote labyrinths in the Atlantic world.
