The High Temple (Structure N10-43) at Lamanai, Belize, was the largest dated Preclassic structure in the Maya world when it was built around 100 BCE — a 33-meter pyramid constructed during a period when conventional histories suggest the Maya were still a simple agricultural society. The temple's massive scale in this early period challenges the traditional narrative of gradual Maya cultural development, suggesting instead a rapid or imported architectural sophistication. Lamanai ("Submerged Crocodile") is remarkable for its 3,000-year occupation sequence — one of the longest continuously inhabited Maya sites, persisting through the Classic collapse that destroyed most lowland cities. At Giza bearing 51.08° and 11,667 km from the Pyramid Plateau, the High Temple overlooks the New River Lagoon, and its facade once bore enormous carved stucco masks of deities. The site's name, preserved in an unbroken tradition from pre-Columbian times, is one of the few Maya city names known with certainty.
