Meroe was the capital of the Kingdom of Kush during its most innovative period (c. 590 BCE - 350 CE), earning Herodotus's description as 'mother city of the Ethiopians.' A major iron-smelting center — enormous slag heaps surround the site — Meroe developed Africa's largest pre-industrial iron technology. The Royal City contains palaces, temples to Amun and Apedemak, and the Royal Baths with their Hellenistic architectural details. The Meroitic script, still only partially deciphered, represents one of Africa's great linguistic mysteries. At 350.17° bearing to Giza across 1,474 km, the capital anchors the Kushite corridor of the Nile energy grid.
